We offer manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) treatment to help with fluid retention and general healing pre and post surgery
MLD is commonly prescribed after surgery, including both medical and cosmetic surgeries.
MLD can begin immediately after surgery or around 3 days after (the sooner the better). The main goal is to prevent a Seroma forming (see below). Gentel pressure and pumping movements used in MLD can help reduce fluid retention.
Risks of surgery
A risk associated to surgery is a Seroma. A Seroma occurs when lymphatic tissue is damaged (or removed) during surgery, leading to a build up of fluids and tissue. Most Seromas will heal natural, however can cause discomfort and prolong the recovery process.
Seroma symptoms
- Swelling / inflammation of the affected areas
- Buldiging or raised appearance to the skin
- Pain / discomfort
- Feeling of fluid under the skin
- Leakage of fluid
While it may not be possible to prevent Seroma occurring, there are measures that can be taken to minimise risk…
- Follow / be led by the surgeon
- Maintenance of hydration and nutrition
- Avoid excessive exercise
- Wear compression garments
While surgery is generally safe, there is a risk of also developing firbosis (thickening of the scar tissue) - massage and lymphatic drainage can be beneficial to reducing this also.
The lymphatic system functions as a filtration network, removing waste, toxins, and excess fluid. Lymph nodes, located throughout the body, act as checkpoints where lymph is purified before re-entering circulation.
Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage massage works by:
1. Stimulating Lymph Nodes - Gentle pressure is applied to key lymphatic points to activate drainage.
2. Encouraging Lymph Flow - Rhythmic, directional strokes push lymph fluid toward the nodes.
3. Reducing Water Retention - Excess fluid is manually moved toward excretion pathways.
4. Enhancing Blood Circulation - Increased circulation promotes oxygenation and nutrient delivery.
5. Detoxifying the Body - Waste products and metabolic toxins are flushed more efficiently.
The lymph system is part of your body's immune system and helps fight infection. It transports nutrients and oxygen to cells, collecting toxins on the way and flushing them out through the lymph nodes. The pressure from your blood vessels and movement from your muscles push the lymphatic fluid around.
While the heart continuously pumps blood through the blood vessels, the lymphatic system relies on the movement of smooth muscles to transport fluid through the lymph vessels.
Health conditions can interrupt the normal flow of lymph, causing lymph fluid to build up in a particular areas of the body.
Lymphatic drainage massage can help also with people experiencing:
Reduce water retention/swelling
Reduce post injury swelling
Pre and Post Surgery
Lymphedema
General Heath benefits
Fibromyalgia
Migraines
Digestive problems
Edema
Fatigue
Stress
Insomnia
People can also boost their lymphatic system function and help remove more waste from the body using the following methods:
drinking plenty of water
staying physically active
eating vegetables and fruits
limiting the intake of processed foods
How do you know if it’s working:
- Felling less stiff
- Reduction of swelling or swelling hasn’t worsened.
- Less Fatigue
- Less restless in the lower leg generally.
- Muscles reduce in achiness.
MLD can help improve the appearance of cellulite, but will not get rid of it completely
Tissue can get knotted, tighten, and scarred, which can limit movement. The use of dry cupping, in likeness with manual massage therapy, can aid these effects by increasing blood supply to the muscle, fascia and skin and increasing pliability of soft tissue.
Dry Cupping pulls blood to an area and the tissue becomes saturated with fresh blood while the vacuum pulls stagnant blood out of the area.
A biproduct of this is round bruising appearance that is typically left behind. The mark may produce a black and blue appearance but it’s rarely painful.
As new blood is forced into the tissues around the cups the body will begin to develop new blood vessels called neovascularisation (new blood vessel formation). As the new vessels form, they will have the capability to feed the tissues with nutrient and oxygen.
Cupping can be beneficial to many muscular-skeletal condition such as; plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, sciatica, shin splints, general muscular tightness, back, neck and shoulder pain and many more.. .
Benefits of cupping:
• Increase in circulation to the muscle, fascia and skin, which increases oxygenation and nutrient levels within the soft tissue.
• Increases the removal of chemical irritants within muscle and fascia and the removal of stagnant blood.
• Increases the removal of oedema after injury.
• Produces a stretch reflex in fascia and connective tissue, which increases mobility at the joint.
• Cupping techniques that include active movement stimulate the nervous system and aid in re-educating muscle memory and proprioception.
• Aids in the management of pain, as cupping therapy reduces muscular tension, nerve compression and irritation through the build-up of chemical irritants, whilst increasing range of movement.
• Works well in conjunction with other therapy such as sports and remedial massage, joint mobilisations and Dry Needling, medical acupuncture, and heat therapy.

Had an appointment with Holly as I had cricked my back. She was very friendly and quickly worked out how best to treat it. She eased all the affected areas with a thorough massage and later emailed a set of exercises for me to do as a follow up. Excellent service and thoroughly recommended.
